The Entrepreneurial Expertise Center in pavilion 33 had a strong focus on IT solutions designed to optimize linkages in the timber supply chain. There was NavLog, which provides enhanced forest track navigation data, the ELDATdata exchange format, and the QS-Harvester quality assurance system for log harvesters. The special forestry displays in pavilions 33 (Expertise Center) and 34 (Hot Innovations) were organized by the German Forestry Council (KWF) and Deutsche Messe.
The floor of the NavLog stand in Pavilion 33 was an oversized aerial photograph overlaid with standardized data on classified forest tracks. The display - the firstever demonstration of NavLog's online database in live mode - was very well received, with many visitors taking up the offer to test NavLog's data via a trial membership.
There was a Valmet harvester simulator, where visitors could fell a test log, digitally measure it, and feed the data into the simulator unit. In Pavilion 34, the German Forestry Council demonstrated ideas for developing new business areas and growing and optimizing existing ones. These included bioenergy solutions, alternative drive technologies and solutions for reducing harvester tire damage to forest floors.
The KWF's offering was very popular with the upcoming generation of forestry professionals, with around ten groups of school and tertiary students turning to the KWF for careers information on every day of the fair. The premiere of the "Careers in the Forestry & Wood Industries" was an instant success.
Among the big crowd-pleasers was the live demonstration of the KWF testing system for combined log sawing and splitting machines. This involved recently KWF-certified manufacturers putting their machines through their paces in front of Pavilion 33. The KWF had planned only 4 demonstrations per day, but had to switch to a continuous demonstration format in response to visitor demand. For the KFW, this is clear evidence of continued strong interest in bioenergy.

SRC stands for "Short Rotation Coppice." Usually, SRCs consists of fast-growing tree species that are planted on farmland to produce wood fiber for use as a material or as energy biomass. These types of plantations are growing in importance as competing alternative uses for wood drive up demand for this renewable but limited natural re-source. The main emphasis at all three pavilions P32, P34, P35) is on providing information on the planning, estab-lishment and management of SRCs as well as on variety and seed stock selection.

The information offering will include findings from the following cooperative research projects:
- Proloc - Determination and modeling of interactions between poplar and willow clones and local agrofor-estry planting sites (Hessenrohstoffe, HeRo, P34)
- Fastwood - Breeding programs for fast-growing tree species used as a renewable resource in short rotation coppices (Nordwestdeutsche Forstliche Versuchsanstalt, NWFVA, P32/34)
In addition, the pavilions will be staffed by experts who will be happy to advise visitors on the silvicultural man-agement of short rotation coppices - the cycle from planting through to harvesting and regrowth (HeRO, P34) - and on marketing the new poplar variety, Matrix (NWFVA and HeRo, P34).
Wald-Agentur Münster GmbH at Pavilion 35 will also provide expert advice and downstream support - from the initial concept development stage through to the marketing stage. The company also provides assessment services and develops management and mobilization concepts for potential dendromass sources (e.g. wood fiber from farm-ing and landscaping operations). Its offering at the fair is rounded off by information on pre-forest establishment using a mix of poplar and target species, for instance in windthrow sites or in new forest establishment areas.

Sustainable Forestry and Wood-Based Industries as Key Contributors to Intelligent and Integrative Growth in Europe

The forestry and wood sector is seeking answers to the challenges of climate change - and strategies for maintaining and strengthening its own ability to compete in the marketplace. Now there are plans to position wood as one of the most important renewable resources and to derive greater value from our forests. These are the aims of the EU innovation and research project "IN2WOOD", which was launched at the start of the year. 13 project partners from six European forest regions - Styria (Austria), North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany), South Tyrol (Italy), Banska Bystrica (Slovakia), Grisons (Switzerland) and the Carpathians (Ukraine) - have formed an alliance to develop a strategic action plan for innovation processes in the timber-based sector. And they will be promoting their endeavours at LIGNA HANNOVER, widely acknowledged as the world's most important platform for the forestry and timber industries. International knowledge transfer and networking between exhibitors and visitors create an ideal environment for innovative projects to succeed. The broad aims of the action plan and a series of pilot schemes that IN2WOOD intends to roll out by the time the project ends in June 2012 have already been clearly formulated:
-Increasing timber production through the development of new forestry management systems
-Strengthening technical innovation systems for the sustainable and energy-efficient utilization of wood
-Promoting greater awareness of the role of wood as a versatile and contemporary construction material and fuel source, and dispelling misconceptions about wood
-Improving the efficiency of logistical systems.

Solid biogenic fuels are mainly used in megawatt-scale cogeneration plants, the construction of which has soared since Germany's Renewable Energy Act (EEG) was passed in 2000. Since then, reserves of the preferred type of waste wood (Classes A2 - A4, as defined by the German Waste Wood Directive (AltholzVO) have been depleted. The 2009 amendment to the EEG has resulted in a re-focus on natural biomass fuels and innovative technologies.
The consistent and predictable heat requirements of district heating networks, industry and small-scale manufacturing favor the establishment of wood-fired cogeneration plants that use classic steam turbine and increasingly also ORC technology. Key fuel sources are waste wood from forestry, landscaping and sawmilling operations.
The conference will provide an overview of the current state of development and areas of application of wood-based cogeneration technologies and present concrete case studies of some of the available systems. It is targeted at industry and manufacturing operations, both within and outside the wood processing sector, operators and planners of wood-fired cogeneration plants and energy utilities.

The Carbon Bank is an international climate protection project represented by the Landesbeirat Holz NRW (Advisory board for timber of North Rhine-Westphalia) since 2009. The Carbon Bank currently operates in Germany and Switzerland. The Allianz Landesbeiräte Holz is the project's official representative in Germany, while the Verband für geprüfte Qualitätshäuser adopts the same role in Switzerland. The project aims to use PR activities on the subject of carbon binding to highlight the valuable contribution that forestry and wood make to climate protection. The goal is to get politics and business to recognize the role this process plays in climate protection.
For this purpose, a database is used to document the quality and quantity of the reduction in the atmospheric greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) brought about by the buildings and services of the forestry and wood industries.
Since May 2010, the Carbon Bank has had a dedicated forest for research. An area of around 5 hectares is located in the temperate climate zone in close proximity to one of the weather stations of Deutscher Wetterdienst (German Meteorological Service) on the Kahler Asten mountain, North Rhine-Westphalia. A wooded area of around 7 hectares in the tropical climate zone in Iloilo in the Philippines was added in July 2010.
The project achieved its first step on the path to success in March 2011, when Switzerland revised its CO2 law to create a legal foundation for the sink effect of wooden constructions on CO2.

The United Nations have declared 2011 the International Year of Forests. The German state of Lower Saxony sees the IYC campaign as an opportunity to profile forests as fascinating natural habitats and the forestry and wood industry as an important part of the economy.
Lower Saxony is Germany's second-largest federal state in terms of land area. It is home to a number of climatically and geographically diverse natural regions, ranging from the Kaufungen Forest in the South, to the central Harz mountains and Luneburg Heath regions, to the East Frisian-Oldenburg Geest region in the northwest. Pines predominate in the plains, beech in the Weser Uplands, and spruce in the Harz mountains.
The forests of Lower Saxony constitute Germany's best-preserved, large-scale wildlife habitat, home to a rich array of flora and fauna. They protect and filter the region's drinking water; prevent soil erosion; help maintain a well-balanced climate; provide a natural buffer against noise and visual pollution; are important leisure and recreation areas; and produce wood.
Lower Saxony's forests currently produce wood at a faster rate than it is harvested. The state thus has good timber reserves. Demand for wood is, however, rising, owing to an ever-increasing variety of wood uses. While this is desirable, the primary focus must always be to place the various aspects of this kind of multifunctional forest management on a sound ecological footing. This necessitates greater R&D into and promotion of efficiency in wood utilization. Making optimal use of our renewable wood resources also means achieving an optimal interplay between the competing uses of forests, namely for the production of wood materials, energy and heating.
Discover the Lower Saxony forestry industry's innovative technologies, latest R&D projects and public education activities in Pavilion 32.

Short-rotation coppices are plantations cultivated for biomass on agricultural land. They are permanent crops in the sense that they can remain viable for several decades. During this period, they are harvested multiple times at set intervals, with the trees re-sprouting from the roots and stumps after each harvest. SRC cultivation is a very extensive form of cultivation and one that contributes significantly to maintaining soil integrity. There are currently about 5,000 hectares of short-rotation coppices in Germany, most of them planted and cultivated for research purposes. SRC forestry has experienced steady and sustained growth in Germany over the past ten years, with more and more land being put into commercial scale cultivation. This two-hour forum will give a brief overview of the various aspects of short rotation coppicing, taking in past experiences, relevant cultivation objectives, options for using the wood for energy production and raw materials, and other areas of innovation. The forum will comprise a series of brief papers, which will be followed by a panel discussion, during which the views of the floor will be gauged and a consensus statement formulated.

Wood is not only our oldest functional material, it is also our most important renewable resource. This is especially true in Germany. One third of Germany's land area is under forest cover, and the country uses around 70 million m³ of wood from sustainably managed forests per year. Thanks to its excellent technical and ecological properties, wood is a material that is suitable for use in the most diverse of applications. Whether it's used for structural purposes or for panel products, the unique natural resource that is wood harbors enormous innovative potential. And there's also another key benefit: when trees grow they remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and, depending on how their timber is used, can store it for very long periods of time. Wood used for material purposes therefore also doubles as a carbon sink.
One of the key applications of wood, especially of softwood, is in the building and construction industry. The development of some highly innovative products has provided a strong boost to wood-based construction in recent years. High-tech timber products, such as glue-laminated beams and cross-laminated timber, have paved the way for multi-storey timber buildings that comply with all relevant safety standards. Low-energy residential building designs have become the standard in the timber construction sector. The wood-based insulation materials used in such buildings feature particularly high thermal insulation values.
Because wood consists of around 50% carbon, the chemical industry is increasingly using it as a substitute for fossil carbon sources, such as gas, oil or coal. Cellulose from wood is the basic raw material used to make paper or viscose fabrics. Key tree species that are used for cellulose production are spruce, pine, beech and poplar.

To date, the wood-energy company DEHO (Deutsche Holzenergie Nord GmbH) has been contracted to supply heating to the Beuchte bioenergy village (64 households), to the Braunschweig Waldorf School, and to the Sophie-Scholl comprehensive school in Wennigsen. In each case, contracts between DEHO and local forest owners and farmers assure a long-term supply of wood chip fuel. These contracts are mirrored by long-term heating supply contracts between DEHO and its customers. This benefits both sides: DEHO's customers benefit from long-term heat supply security, and local landowners gain a reliable, local market for their smallwood that will pay attractive rates on a sustained basis. Energy forest cultivation on farmland Vast tracks of farmland in Germany currently lie fallow, owing to their unfavorable shape, remote location or heterogeneous soil quality. At the same time, there are forecasts of dire future smallwood shortages. Against this background, German company Agraligna GmbH has developed a system for putting marginal farmland to more profitable use through the establishment of short-rotation energy coppices. From its home bases in Beuchte and Vollenschier, Agraligna develops innovative silvicultural regimes that are tailored to the unique situation of each planting site. The Beuchte bioenergy village's local-area heat supply In 2008, a wood chip-fired heating plant and a local area heating network were established at the Beuchte bioenergy village. To date, around 50% of the local households have been connected to the network. Since the land belonging to the Beuchte manor estate on which the village is sited consists predominantly of lightly wooded farmland, the heating plant's wood chip fuel has been largely sourced from nearby forestry operations. In 2009, 14 hectares of the Beuchte estate were planted with fast-growing poplar trees.

Wood is one of our most important natural resources. Traditionally used for building, furnishing and the like, it has in recent years also come to be used as biomass for energy production, which, in principle, is a good thing. The problem in Germany is that ad hoc government subsidies are resulting in the wholesale direct burning of an increasing volume of timber which has taken years and years of expert forest cultivation to grow. This is expected to cause severe supply problems in the wood industry and deprive future generations of value and employment in the skilled wood-based trades and industry.
How can we coordinate wood use in a way that benefits the woodworking and wood energy sectors equally? Can the value chain be structured so that wood is always used in a way that generates maximum value? How do we ensure that wood is systematically utilized in a cascade that starts with the multiple use of wood, proceeds to recycling and reprocessing and then - and only then - to consumption as wood scrap and waste wood for power, heating and fuel production? This, according to the research, is the most effective and sensible approach available.

"Wonders in Wood" showcase to feature exquisitely crafted creations in wood
This year, Hall 17 will once again be wholly dedicated to Wonders in Wood, a special presentation comprising a sales exhibition and gallery-only displays. The sales exhibition will feature the works of around 20 craftsmen and artists who were selected from a large pool of applicants. These works can be purchased by interested collectors.
The themed gallery-only displays will be supplied by wood sculpture students from the FE College of Design and Technology Flensburg, who have been invited to exhibit their works at LIGNA as part of an initiative to foster emerging talent in the fields of sculpture and carpentry.
The Wonders in Wood sales exhibition and themed displays can be seen on each day of LIGNA HANNOVER 2011 (30 May to 3 June), from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
FE College of Design and Technology Flensburg
The displays in the gallery-only area have been specially put together for this year's Wonders in Wood presentation by students from the FE College of Design and Technology Flensburg. They give some insight into the projects the students and instructors have been working on recently.
In addition, this year, for the very first time, the College's second-year wood sculpture students will be taking part in the all-new LIGNA Young at Art emerging talent competition.
The Young at Art award was initiated by Deutsche Messe and is supported by Michael Weinig and Wemhöner Surface Technologies. The media partner for the award is the trade journal Exakt, which is published by DRW-Verlag.
The theme for the 2011 Young at Art award is "Growth." The works produced by the participating students will be on show at Wonders in Wood.
Artists, artisans, faculty members and students from the FE College of Design and Technology Flensburg will be at LIGNA for the duration of Wonders in Wood and look forward to expert dialogue with visitors.

Every two years, Lower Saxony's top forwarder and harvester drivers gather at LIGNA HANNOVER to compete in the state crane driving championships. The contest is staged on the southern open-air site at the Hannover showgrounds and tests the drivers in a range of disciplines. In the qualifying round, each driver has a maximum of ten minutes to stack blocks of wood into a tower using their crane. Only the best 16 drivers advance to the Championship competition. In each Championship round, two drivers go head-to-head on identical forwarders. They are required to navigate a specially designed course, loading their machines with logs along the way. The winner is the one who reaches the finish line first with the lowest time penalty. Each winner advances to the next round. The competition proceeds in this way through various rounds, quarter finals and semi finals to the final. The overall winner and runner-up automatically qualify for Germany's national championships. Always exciting and entertaining, the Lower Saxony Crane Driving Championships are a fantastic day out - for drivers and spectators alike. See you there!
