Using protoplast fusion to create energy poplars

In the early part of this year, the Institute of Forest Genetics of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute (vTI) will embark on a three-year R&D project in cooperation with project partners Phytowelt Green Technologies GmbH and the Northwest German Research Institute (NW-FVA). The aim of the project? To use protoplast fusion to develop new poplar varieties that are well adapted to cultivation in short-rotation coppices.

Detecting flaws in wood using ultrasound thermography

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research, Wilhelm Klauditz Institute (Fraunhofer WKI) have, it appears, developed a new method for detecting hidden flaws in wood. The method involves the use of high-power ultrasound thermography to detect longitudinal and transverse cracks, gluing errors, delaminations and bark encased knots.
