„Sustainable Forestry and Wood-Based Industries as Key Contributors to Intelligent and Integrative Growth in Europe”
“Europe has more trees than people. India has more people than trees.”
This is one of many defining statements made on Day One of the IN2WOOD Conference at the LIGNA trade fair in Hannover. It reflects the broad range of topics traversed at the well-attended event.
The second day started with a presentation by the IN2WOOD project partners. Following this, the mentoring partners (Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro, Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina) gave presentations on their regions and associated forestry industry issues. The purpose of the presentations was to identify opportunities for potential projects and cooperative ventures.
The worldwide demand for renewable energies and resource-efficient climate-friendly products is continuously gaining momentum. Sustainable forest management has to deal with the challenges of climate change, a rising demand for wood products and the growing competition between energy and material end-use of the forest resources on a global scale. Wood as a renewable resource of the future, will play an important role for creating added value and sustainable employment opportunities. To realise these potentials, the competitiveness of the traditional forest-based sector is a crucial prerequisite: initiating and structuring innovation and transformation processes needs the collaboration of experts and joint actions. The EU-project IN2WOOD aims at networking and trustful cooperation between entrepreneurs, researchers, administration and policy makers – regionally rooted, yet globally active and interlinked.
Organised by the IN2WOOD consortium, the conference addresses trends in the wood and forest industries on European and international level, as well as chances for the set-up of international cooperation along the wood value added chain.
The conference invites stakeholders of the forest-based sector to discuss the repositioning of the wood value chain in times of societal, ecologic and economic change in order to take first steps to initiate a forum for the formation of an European wood and forest cluster.
