"From 0 to 100 with the Champion" is the slogan that Venjakob Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG is exhibiting under at LIGNA 2017 in Hannover. The specialist for complete coating installations from Rheda-Wiedenbrück is using this motorsport metaphor to encourage visitors to the leading trade fair for the wood industry to "put the pedal to the metal" with high-tech performance. The three spray painting machine models featuring in this high-speed showcase are VEN SPRAY SMART, VEN SPRAY COMFORT and VEN SPRAY PERFECT.

The Venjakob team is aiming to demonstrate its expertise in constructing efficient coating systems. Continuing the motorsport theme, all three machines offer the full package needed to lead from start to finish - from cleaning, pre-treatment and application all the way through to conveyor technology, drying and exhaust air cleaning. This is what the company itself has to say: "Prospective buyers looking for innovative finishing lines should check out the home straight and find out how Venjakob systems can take them safely past the black-and-white checkered flag at high speed."

Three workshop newcomers
British company Toolstream Ltd is bringing not one but three new precision-crafted power tools from the successful Triton brand to LIGNA 2017 in Hannover - a 1200 W belt sander, a tilting table spindle sander and a 750 W pendulum action jigsaw.

The name Triton has been synonymous with precision ever since the first workstation was launched in 1976, and this precision will remain the focal point when designing each and every future Triton tool in Australia. For many years now, the Triton brand has been providing reliable tools for high-precision, high-quality work - from its award-winning plunge routers and circular saws with laser guide to its widely acclaimed SuperJaws clamping systems and its Series 2000 Workcentres. At LIGNA 2017, the three new Triton products - belt sander, spindle sander and pendulum action jigsaw - will be on show at the stand of British company Toolstream Ltd, which is well known as the sole distributor of over 5000 hand and power tools, fixings and adhesives to retailers and wholesalers throughout Europe. Featuring a powerful 1200 W motor (10 A) with variable speed control for fast stock removal, a 100 x 156 mm sanding area and belt-tracking adjustment for accurate alignment of the sanding belt, Triton's new belt sander aims to impress at LIGNA. The oscillating tilting table spindle sander is making its debut in Hannover, complete with a dual-action spindle that rotates and oscillates vertically for fast sanding and an improved work rate. The 0 - 45° tilting table makes for easy chamfering and edge work, while a long-life 350 W induction motor with sealed zero-maintenance bearings ensures a secure investment. Last but not least, the third innovation - the pendulum action jigsaw - boasts a powerful 750 W motor with three-stage pendulum action for outstanding cutting performance. Thanks to dual-axis grips, the tool can be held with both vertical pressure and horizontal direction control. Maintaining a constant speed under load ensures optimized motor control, even when subjected to high loads.

Nothing lifts better than nothing
Handling specialist Schmalz from Glatten in the Black Forest is showcasing high-performance systems for manual and automated vacuum handling in the wood and furniture industries at LIGNA 2017.

In 1656, Otto von Guericke staged a dazzling display with his "Magdeburg hemispheres", which proved the existence of the Earth's atmosphere. He also showed that forces can be harnessed by making clever use of air pressure - a feat that no-one could possibly have imagined would later be put to good use in the woodworking industry. Today, more than 350 years later, vacuum lifting wouldn't really wow many crowds, but this technology does play an important role when it comes to handling workpieces in woodworking applications. "Making more out of wood" is the slogan being used by J. Schmalz GmbH at LIGNA 2017 in Hannover for its powerful systems for manual and automated vacuum handling in the wood and furniture industries. One system making its debut is the new FMHD area gripper specifically developed for the reliable transport of unplaned workpieces.

Lighter than the SBX and more robust than the FMP, the FMHD plugs the gap between these two well-established Schmalz grippers. Available in standard lengths of 400, 850, 1040 and 1250 millimeters, it can be used to transport glued boards as well as sawn or planed items. The vacuum is generated by the energy-saving SBPL ejector, which is mounted in an external box to save space and connected to the FMHD by a flexible hose. In addition to its practical properties, a further impressive feature of the FMHD is that it is easy to service. Soiled sealing foams are easy to clean and dry - without extensive modifications to the gripper. And if the foams become so worn that they need to be replaced, a quick-change adapter reduces the associated downtime.

A breath of fresh air
Kaeser Kompressoren SE is at LIGNA 2017 in Hannover to present Sigma Air Manager 4.0, the latest generation of the master controller for all compressed air production and treatment components.

The latest Sigma Air Manager - SAM 4.0 - performs a number of functions, including optimizing pressure values, automatically adjusting the flow rate of a compressor station with fluctuating pressure consumption, comprehensively increasing energy efficiency on the basis of control and switching losses and pressure flexibility, and equipping existing compressed air stations for future services such as predictive maintenance. All in all, this boosts operational reliability and efficiency while cutting energy costs.

The experts from Kaeser are at LIGNA 2017 to show how these aims can be achieved using solutions such as Adaptive 3Dadvanced Control. This technology doesn't just take into account switching losses (starts/stops) but also other factors affecting a compressed air system’s energy efficiency, such as control losses (idling and frequency conversion) and pressure flexibility (average increase over the required pressure). The innovative control system proactively calculates the optimum achievable combination and controls the connected components accordingly - key to this is the user's required pressure.

SAM 4.0 speaks 30 languages and, thanks to its easy-to-use 12-inch touchscreen color display, users can see at a glance whether the station's energy status is satisfactory, as operating states, pressure flow, volume, power, and maintenance and error messages can be displayed and analyzed, both for the current time and retrospectively. And this can be done not just on site but also via a network connection on a PC in the office, for example. This doesn't just deliver reliability and provide the basis for predictive management but also supports energy management to ISO 50001.

A new era in timber handling
SENNEBOGEN, an international one-stop supplier in the crane technology and material handling sectors, is exhibiting in the outdoor area at LIGNA with the 730E, a new pick & carry machine for timber handling.

Although family-run company SENNEBOGEN, based in Straubing in Germany's Lower Bavaria region, has over 65 years of experience in developing and producing specialist machinery, it refuses to rest on its laurels. This can be seen in the outdoor area at LIGNA 2017 in Hannover, where SENNEBOGEN is showcasing its comprehensive machine range, which offers the perfect solution for any timber logistics task. The 7 series from SENNEBOGEN features machines specially designed for timber handling, thus making them a popular choice for log yards and timber logistics. The latest addition to the 7 series, the 730E material handler, isn’t just celebrating its LIGNA premiere - it also exemplifies SENNEBOGEN’s pick & carry machine concept.

In line with this concept, the new 730E has been engineered from the ground up to meet the needs of mobile timber handling. For instance, an articulated boom behind the center of the machine ensures ideal weight distribution. Optimum blade control thanks to Swiss precision
Chaco, which has specialized in saw blade guides for over 60 years, is at LIGNA to showcase a contactless electronic blade control system that can measure lateral and axial blade deviations during sawing.

Chaco-Produkte AG, based in Dübendorf, Switzerland, became famous due to its Chaco Low Friction Material, a high-grade plastic molding compound, which is ideal for guiding saw blades. Chaco Low Friction Material stands out in particular thanks to its high abrasion resistance and low coefficient of friction. It can also cope with temperatures up to around 150 degrees Celsius and is largely resistant to oil, water, ice and light acids and bases. As well as the BE 2020 electronic blade control system, Chaco is also at LIGNA 2017 to exhibit a selection of pressure and guiding elements and standard blade guides for table saws and smaller band resaws with blade widths of 4 to 100 millimeters.

The BE 2020 electronic blade deviation detector can be used to ensure compliance with narrow cut-off tolerances, to enable automatic control of carriage speed and to detect blade overload, as it supports the contactless measurement of lateral blade deviations during sawing and displays the results. The system, which operates with a proximity initiator as a sensor, displays its signals with an accuracy of 0.01 millimeters in volume and direction. The permissible tolerance is preselected in increments of 0.1 millimeters. The BE 2020 blade deviation detector produces an analog output signal for use in an automatic carriage speed control system. It is also equipped with a contact with zero potential that can be used in combination with an external warning system as a limit sensor.

Music to the ears!
In addition to its innovative tool portfolio, Swabian company Festool, a premium manufacturer of system products for tradespeople, is also exhibiting a product to keep workers entertained at LIGNA 2017 in Hannover.

Building sites have their very own soundtrack of circular saws, drills and cement mixers. Together, these "instruments" create a cacophony of sound that leaves little scope for conversations or any background music in the workplace. Not all sites are faced with such an impenetrable wall of noise, though, and this has led to the recent emergence of radios designed specifically to ensure workers on building sites can enjoy energizing music or catch up on the latest news. Festool, the Wendlingen-based manufacturer of system products for tradespeople, is now bringing its own interpretation of a construction site radio to LIGNA 2017 in Hannover - one that meets the company's usual high standards.

The new, robust SYSROCK BR 10 construction site radio from Festool combines compact dimensions and a lightweight design with impeccable sound quality. Like many of this company's tools, the SYSROCK BR 10 can be powered by a Festool battery pack if there's nowhere handy to plug it in. Thanks to a Bluetooth interface and integrated hands-free function, users can also play music on their smartphones through the speaker or make sure everyone on site can hear what the boss is saying when he calls. Cut out the noise!
At LIGNA 2017, ProLock won't be making a song and dance about the cutting quality of its innovative GlueLiner LowNoise saw blades for making gluable saw cuts in wood materials – after all, they generate virtually half the usual noise level.

ProLock has years of experience in high-speed cutting (HSC). Over time, the company has built up a wealth of expertise working on all kinds of projects for well-known industrial customers and can provide some impressive references when it comes to designing and manufacturing special tools. It is exhibiting a range of high-quality tools at LIGNA 2017, including the new GlueLiner LowNoise saw blades for making gluable saw cuts in wood materials.

Above all, the saw blades reduce cutting forces and minimize the necessary kerf width. They also feature alternate top bevel teeth followed by a flat tooth as a raker. The tooth group combinations of 5 teeth each deliver optimum results when cutting both lengthways and widthways, with sharp cut edges on the material and a small kerf. It's even possible to dispense with the chip spaces associated with conventional saw blades, although small chip spaces have been retained for better brazing of the hard metal. In addition to their low-noise operation, which makes for a nice quiet workshop, GlueLiner LowNoise saw blades reduce cutting pressure. This, combined with their long service life and optimum cut edges in absolute finished-cut quality, will keep users happy.

The grinder that makes life easy

Protecting the forests - and changing perceptions?
Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences is presenting HIPHAR, a cooperation project where research institutes are working with industry partners to develop components for fully mechanized hardwood harvesting to minimize environmental impact and increase resource efficiency.

From the murder house in American Horror Story to the setting for a German TV crime series, the name Rosenheim seems to be associated with death and violence in the world of fiction. In the real world, however, the Bavarian city is home to very much more peaceful institutions. One example is the Faculty of Wood Technology and Construction at Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences, which has now been carrying out wood-related research and development for ninety years. During this time it has been the driving force behind a number of exciting projects. In fact, in the wood industry, the name Rosenheim is more closely associated with graduates from a world-class university than anything ghoulish. The faculty is now at LIGNA 2017 in Hannover to showcase its full range of wood expertise, including the HIPHAR project.

The HIPHAR project focuses on a research topic of current and, first and foremost, future relevance - the management and thinning of hardwood stocks, a challenging task for the years to come. Devastating examples from the past remind us what happens if the stability of stocks falls victim to the demand for ever greater yields. The technical developments and studies carried out in HIPHAR are intended to help minimize the environmental and industrial impact of using hardwood stocks. The project is also yielding important findings for designing rubber conveyor belt profiles and optimized harvester assemblies.

The fine art of mechanical engineering from the Netherlands
Marinus Machinebouw B.V. is at LIGNA 2017 to showcase two truly powerful innovations - the Powermax Finger Jointer & Defecting Saw and the Powermax CHEVRON Endmatcher.

The Powermax CHEVRON can handle any angle between -45 and +45 degrees with 100% angle accuracy. The special features of the Powermax Chevron include its feeding system, which can produce up to 15 pieces per minute.

Rethinking landscape management - a lightbulb moment
The Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe (Agency for Renewable Resources - FNR) is in Hall 11 and at the Firewood Production Line special display in the outdoor area to give informative guided tours of the greenGain project and explain technical solutions for generating energy from wood that is a byproduct of landscape management activities.

The greenGain project funded by the European support program Horizont 2020 is designed to promote the generation of energy using regional and local biomass acquired from landscape management activities throughout Europe. The project is intended to optimize the use of biomass from roadside vegetation and landscape management material to generate energy in the EU. With this in mind, the FNR and its partners have set their sights in particular on regional public authorities and other players who are responsible for landscape management measures in the public interest.

Further players include companies involved in harvesting technology, logistics, storage and conversion as well as civil society. The project also focuses on networking and the use of results in Europe. The FNR is coordinating the running of the project and the team, which consists of eight project partners from four European Union countries. The European partners include COALS (Germany), SYNCOM (Germany), CIRCE (Spain), OMEZYMA (Spain), Cz Biom (Czech Republic), Sogesca (Italy) and CM-ACT (Italy).

Among other things, the project consortium is looking to analyze the potential of landscape management material and how it can best be used to generate bioenergy, evaluate experience from pilot projects in relation to the market offering for landscape management material, and take into account legal, political and social aspects. Another of the project consortium’s tasks is to publicize and apply the project results - something it aims to achieve by creating an EU knowledge platform, for example - and of course by showcasing the project at LIGNA 2017.

State-of-the-art CAD measuring system that helps even the most skilled professionals
Flexijet GmbH is at LIGNA 2017 in Hannover to show why its fast, flexible and precise measuring systems have become indispensable aids, particularly for planning and construction projects in existing buildings.

We live in an age when home improvement stores make DIY enthusiasts believe they can do everything as well as skilled tradesmen. Yet there are still so many things that set professionals apart from amateurs. Take, for example, the kinds of jobs where amateurs simply haven't a clue where to start, such as measuring complex structures. As early as 2007, Flexijet GmbH recognized that even professionals appreciate a helping hand with this kind of work, and since then it has been carrying out pioneering work on digital measuring systems. Over the ten years since it was established, the company has developed Flexijet 3D, a pioneering CAD measuring system for planning, tradeswork and architecture, and a constantly expanding and successful product range built around this system. Professionals and amateurs alike can see what it can do for themselves at LIGNA 2017 in Hannover.

The current version of the Flexijet 3D measuring system sends the results of its precise measurements to the specially developed FlexiCAD software directly on site. This software then uses the data to produce professional three-dimensional CAD drawings in the same step. The complete CAD drawing is thus immediately available for downstream systems in DWG or DXF format. When it comes to actually taking the measurements, the system can handle even difficult areas without the need for any aids such as scaffolding or ladders. Rooms, stories and entire buildings can also be measured, as well as curved shapes, arches and stairs. The option of making an instant visual comparison with the actual objects being measured also makes it virtually impossible to forget measurements - unlike laser scanners, which only provide point clouds. Last but not least, because Flexijet 3D can also be used to project laser-accurate displays of CAD points, it can also speed up installation work very effectively.

Hitting the nail on the head every time
The BECK Fastener Group is at LIGNA 2017 to present LignoLoc, the first nailgun-compatible wooden nails for innovative applications in industrial production and eco-friendly timber construction.

There are so many different ways to join together two bits of wood - some of which have been tried and tested over millenia. And yet there is still scope for innovation in this area - and possibly even revolution. The BECK Fastener Group, based in Mauerkirchen, Austria, is a family-run company founded in 1904 that has been one of the leading suppliers of fastening technologies for over 85 years. Right on cue for LIGNA 2017 in Hannover, the company is now expanding its range of fasteners for joining wood to wood - which is already the world's largest - with the unique LignoLoc wooden nail.

The revolutionary LignoLoc wooden nails are made of domestic beechwood and have a tensile strength of 250 Newtons per square millimeter. Thanks to their impressive mechanical properties, the wooden nails can be fired into solid construction timber using the FASCO LignoLoc pneumatic nailer to create a permanent joint - and all without having to pre-drill the wood. When compared to fasteners made of aluminum or steel, the wooden nails' most impressive feature is that they don't create thermal bridges or leave traces of corrosion in the wood. The pioneering LignoLoc system is patent pending and is due to be launched onto the market in the second half of 2017.

The cogeneration unit for the living room
HE Energy GmbH is at LIGNA 2017 in Hannover to present a world first - the e-stove, which supplies heat, electricity and hot water in equal measure.

In the quest for the most cost-efficient and resource-friendly energy generation, clearly no stone is being left unturned. HE Energy GmbH, based in Wismar in northern Germany, is at LIGNA 2017 in Hannover to present a genuine world first - the e-stove. This stove, which is on the brink of being launched onto the market, is a wood-nano cogeneration unit for producing heat, electricity and hot water for the home, heating the living room and lighting it with LED lamps. Visitors to LIGNA can see how the innovative e-stove generates heat and electricity in live demonstrations.

Thanks to the above features, the e-stove can also be used as a backup if conventional heating systems stop working after a power failure, for example. A key aspect of this innovation is the use of thermoelectric generators (TEGs), which enable direct conversion of thermal energy from the wood fire into electrical energy. For decades now, this reliable technology has been used to supply energy to space probes far away from Earth, for instance - albeit without a wood fire in sight, of course.

Heavy machinery for logging and timber handling has become increasingly popular in Germany, particularly since the strong winds of recent times. That is one more reason for Liebherr - one of the world's biggest manufacturers of construction machinery - to focus its energies on the wood processing industry. At LIGNA 2017 in Hannover, the Kirchdorf-based company is showcasing its newly developed L 580 LogHandler XPower, which features the very latest Stage IV / Tier 4f engine technology.

The Liebherr L 580 LogHandler XPower features a specially designed lift arm that allows high manipulation heights and long ranges. As a result, logs can be picked up and manipulated even at great height. The wheel loader is particularly suitable for tasks such as loading and unloading trucks, feeding debarking and sorting machines as well as handling, transporting and high stacking logs. A wide selection of grapple versions and sizes make the LogHandler particularly versatile and flexible in use. The grapple can be rotated 360° and pivots forward and backward.

...at least when it comes to sawmill knives: The Remscheid-based HDS Group is staging a premiere at LIGNA as it exhibits its ThermoCut products, which boast excellent hardness, bending strength and fracture resistance and come in a distinctive red color.

HDS-Group GmbH has built up a strong reputation in the industry for developing, designing, manufacturing and selling machine tools for the sawmill sector.
