RIF Institute for Research and Transfer, Dortmund, was founded in 1990 as the "Dortmund Initiative for Computer-Integrated Manufacturing (RIF e.V)" as a association of university teachers from various technology-oriented university sectors to stimulate the transfer of research into practice. As one of the Johannes Rau research institutes in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, RIF develops with more than 150 employees findings from the basic research interdisciplinary and application-oriented so that they can be used by companies in practice.In the field of forestry, RIF models real forest stands as virtual ecosystems and production sites and therefore serves as an innovative source of information and an aid for planning and orientation in forestry. The objective of these instruments and techniques is to facilitate sustainable forest management with low personnel intensity.
