Product description

The exhibited model is a shipping container with a newly developed hybrid wood-based material for the floor panel. The replica of the section of a corner of a shipping container is equipped with a floor panel of wood-based material, in which the floor construction and cross-section can be seen. This type of hybrid construction of the floor panel, made from bamboo core and veneer surface layer as a composite, is a new phenomenon in the transport sector. Through the application of the fast-growing raw material bamboo for the hybrid floor construction, the researchers anticipate cost savings in production with simultaneously consistent material properties compared to conventional floors, as well as positive ecological consequences through resource conservation. A significant advantage of the new hybrid material is the faster and therefore more cost-effective repair possibility for the container floor. An application in the freight space of a truck is also conceivable. The expertize of the Fraunhofer WKI lies in the production of bamboo panels by means of the so-called Scrimber wood technology. For this, facilities for the crushing, compacting and processing of wood and other renewable raw materials are utilized, together with the WKI's own veneer peeling machine, in order to identify the required parameters as well as suitable woods for the veneer surface layer.
