“How can sustainable materials and construction methods be utilized in lightweight structures? Can the CO2 footprint in boatbuilding be reduced? How can proven construction methods in boatbuilding be transferred to other industries? Do the new materials fulfill the structural, processing-technology and cost requirements?”
These and further questions were addressed by researchers and designers within a cooperative project between the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research WKI and the Institute for Design Research at the Braunschweig University of Art (HBK). The results will be presented at LIGNA 2019. The three presented exhibits show three variants for rational production using sustainable materials, for example for boatyards, bicycle manufacturers and their customers.
The exhibits are interesting for sectors which utilize high-strength and high-rigidity structures (e.g. boatbuilding). Through the unusual design with surfaces and edges and the use of renewable raw materials, new customer groups can be attained. A transfer of the demonstrated mixed-construction method to other products would be expedient. Within industry, a growing interest in sustainably produced materials can be observed; a need for supportive research and training therefore exists. For many years, the WKI and the HBK have been addressing the subject of materials and design for sustainability; the collaboration has strengthened these efforts.
