Straw - Germany's Untapped Resource
In the midst of a crisis, GETEC, a German specialist in decarbonized energy solutions, showed the way by supporting DREWSEN SPEZIALPAPIERE, a historic German specialty paper manufacturer, in developing carbon neutral on-demand heat and power for their paper production site in Lachendorf, Germany. They decided on a new and innovative Combined Heat & Power Plant fueled by Cereal Straw (Wheat, Rye, Barley & Oat Straw) ¿ a sustainable, abundant and untapped resource in Germany.
BURMEISTER & WAIN ENERGY (BWE), a historic Danish company founded in 1843 and specialized in boiler design for complex agricultural biomass, was selected for the supply and construction of the Straw Fired Boiler in Lachendorf. The boiler utilizes locally sourced cereal straw as primary fuel with the possibility of supplementing with virgin or demolition wood chips. The fuel will be combusted on a state-of-the-art BWE Water Cooled Vibration Grate (WCVG) releasing 55 MWt superheated steam at 112 bara and 543 °C.
This collaboration between DREWSEN, GETEC and BURMEISTER & WAIN ENERGY has become a light house for Germany¿s future renewable energy strategy, whether the client is an industry or a municipality developing local district heat. DREWSEN, GETEC and BURMEISTER & WAIN ENERGY are not only highlighting the potential of straw as an untapped resource in Germany, but also their commitment to innovation and sustainability.
The plant is expected to be operational in third quarter of 2026, consolidating DREWSEN, GETEC and BURMEISTER & WAIN ENERGY as leaders in green and clean energy and transition to sustainable industrial energy production.
