At IBHolz, we teach the basics and specializations of building with wood and other renewable materials as part of the civil engineering degree program. In the Bachelor's degree, the subjects “Building Construction”, “Building Physics” and “Timber Construction” are taught. This knowledge is deepened in the Master's degree, particularly in the field of timber engineering. Students learn how to implement the theoretical principles in research through laboratories, work experience and final theses. Practical seminars and excursions to our partners in the timber construction industry provide insights into construction practice.
In our research, we focus on timber construction-specific issues of mechanics, material behavior and building physics as well as various aspects of circular and resource-efficient construction. In collaboration with the Fraunhofer WKI, we are currently researching the reuse of waste wood and the recycling-friendly optimization of timber panel walls.
