Pavilion 35 - Wald und Holz NRW highlights potential for wood as a raw material
In Pavilion 35, you will experience how the Forestry and Wood Cluster is taking on the challenges posed by climate change and current forest damage. A central role is played by the potential created by the transformation towards a modern, resource-efficient and climate-neutral economy. Under the motto "NRW - Making more out of wood", the partners at the joint stand of Wald und Holz NRW will present the associated, new uses for the raw material wood.

Useful Impulses for the Resource-efficient Use of Wood
Center for Forest and Timber Management on Advantages of Hardwoods
Load-bearing hardwood applications
As part of the thematic focus "Potentials of hardwood for timber construction of the future", the Center for Forest and Timber Management will show, among other things, the use of birch in bonded and load-bearing timber construction products. This includes silvicultural recommendations and maintenance concepts for the production of sawable birch logs in reforestation of calamity areas. In addition, demonstrators are used to present projects such as "FlexiMoH" for the development of flexible modular timber construction systems and high-performance load-bearing structures.
Europäisches Forstinstitut (EFI) puts Bioeconomy at Center Stage
"Forest Bioeconomy in Action"
The European Forest Institute (EFI) generates, connects and shares knowledge at the interface between research and policy. At LIGNA 2023, under the motto "Forest Bioeconomy in Action", the EFI will present the cooperation of European regions as well as innovations and projects for a circular forest- and wood-based bioeconomy. Here, too, the use of wood in construction is a special focus.

Calamity Wood in Focus
The possible uses of dead spruce trees and the storage of large quantities of calamity wood after major damage caused by drought and bark beetle infestation are the topics of the NUKAFI research project course with live demonstrations under the EXPO roof. In addition, the wood technology properties of timber construction products made from calamity wood will be the topic of discussion, which will be shown, among other things, as part of the demonstrator for the Tiny House of a start-up company from NRW.
Smart Forestry Joint Project networks Planning, Harvesting + Logistics
Logistics based on Digital Twins
The networking of planning, timber harvesting and logistics on the basis of digital twins is demonstrated by the NRW joint stand as part of the "Smart Forestry" joint project. Via situation-specific, freely configurable value creation networks, it enables the communication of all actors "at eye level" in the control, evaluation and optimization of the timber harvesting process as well as its integration into upstream and downstream process stages.
Intelliway Joint Project focuses on Forestry Road Network
Sensor-based monitoring and planning
The focus of the joint project "Intelliway" is on sensor-based monitoring of the condition of the forest road network and the planning of maintenance measures. The sensor data are collected automatically during trail inspections. Machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) methods are used to analyze the sensor data, detect existing trail damage and identify damage classes for individual trail sections.
Efficiency Agency NRW promotes optimized Production Processes
More added value and competitiveness
Improved and sustainable production processes can significantly increase value creation and competitiveness in wood processing companies. At the joint stand, the Effizienz-Agentur NRW will be available to answer all questions on the implementation and promotion of measures to increase resource efficiency in the timber industry.
German Pellet Institute informs about Enplus Certification
Energetic use of Forest Energy wWood
The energetic use of forest energy wood offers value-added potential in the context of a decentralized heat supply with renewable energies. However, the prerequisite for this is the provision of the fuel suitable for biomass combustion. The joint presentation of the German Pellet Institute and Wald und Holz NRW provides information on fuel parameters and quality management in accordance with the Enplus certification for the preparation of wood chips.
Wald und Holz NRW and the German Forestry Council invite you
